Ray Leaycraft made it through his Pacemaker procedure with flying colors on Oct 24th. He went home the same day and walked 1.6 miles with Cindy on Oct 25th! He said he could really feel a difference, in a good way!

World Polio Day is October 24th

Rotary International will celebrate the progress we have made in the fight against polio and remind the world that polio anywhere is a threat to children everywhere.

We need your support so that together, we will EndPolio.org for good. Please consider contributing what you can to support polio eradication.

Announcements:

Interact meets on October 27th at the Middle School. They will also meet on Nov 3, Nov 7, and Dec 1 at 11:36am-12:06pm in Room 215.

Eric Blackhurst announced that he met Jonas Salk during a large-scale national study, enrolling over one million subjects to test the polio vaccine. The next year, on 12 April 1955, Salk announced the results: the vaccine was both safe and efficacious. Subsequent data showed that in 1955, there were approximately 29,000 cases of poliomyelitis in the US. Today we are 99.9% polio free in the world.

Berta and Jean attended a WASH Symposium in Denver on Saturday in the new CSU SPUR Hydro Building. The D5450 WASH Local Action Group was created in 2011 to join together District 5450 Rotarians and other professionals to promote international water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) projects and programs. The focus of this symposium was on “Human Centered Design” which is a methodology that puts people at the center of a process to create innovative ways to solve problems for a community that wants help. It’s a non-linear approach to problem solving that puts those involved at the center of the solution. Their takeaway was that you can’t just bring in a water project to an area just because you think they would be better off WITHOUT first getting buy-in from the locals. Global grants will need to have proof that the locals want our help with any project before we go further.

Janet Zeschin announced that she helped with the Scholastic book fair at the elementary school. The school is so thrilled to have the support of our Plant a Book, Grow and Child program. Janet mentioned that every book given through this program has a sticker that mentions Sunrise Rotary.

Scott Applegate announced that the boys cross country did well and 2 boys, Austin and Chris, individually qualified for State. Also, the girls high school Cross Country team is going to State.

Sunny announced that we had 22 at the Snowy Peaks Wine and Cheese social. Thanks to Sunny for organizing the event - it was really fun!

Sunny announced "Treasure Tables", an Arts & Crafts Holiday Sale on Saturday, October 28th at the Events Complex/Fairgrounds. This is sponsored by P.E.O. Chapter IY, Estes Park. P.E.O. stands for Philanthropic Educational Organization. Proceeds go towards School Scholarships.

Cory Workman thanked the Fine Arts Guild, including Eric and Suzy Blackhurst, for putting on such an amazing show last Friday.

Cory also announced that the trailer is now wrapped in all the Bobcat logos and the Estes Park HS Marching Band will head to State Competition is in Pueblo on October 30th.

Sunrise Rotary will match your Paul Harris donation 2:1 between now and December 31^st with a minimum donation of $100!! For some of you, this will help you towards your initial Paul Harris and for others it will help you get to your next $1000 level. The Club will use its discretion and designate accrued PH points to help those who donate, but haven't yet received a PH, to become a Paul Harris Fellow for the first time. RSVP's are required for attendance at National Philanthropy Day @ YMCA on Nov 9th. It's a free dinner awards event but you need to RSVP. Our Club is nominated for the Shavlik Nonprofit of the Year Award. Jean and Kendra have been nominated for the Katie Speer Award. See below for list of awards.

Katie Speer Philanthropist of the Year

This award is intended to recognize an individual or group who has made a significant impact on the Estes Valley community in the previous year through philanthropic activities. Employees of institutions that do philanthropic work are not eligible for this award for work performed in the course of their regular job duties.

Business Philanthropist of the Year

The Business Philanthropist of the Year award is intended to recognize a business that has had a significant impact on the Estes Valley community in the previous year through philanthropic activities.

Enduring Service Award

The Enduring Service award is intended to recognize an individual or group who has made an extraordinary long-term impact on the Estes Valley community through philanthropic activities. Employees of institutions that do philanthropic work are not eligible for this award for work performed in the course of their regular job duties.

Youth Philanthropist of the Year

The Youth Philanthropist of the Year award is intended to recognize an individual or group (18 years old or younger) who has made a significant impact on the Estes Valley community in the previous year through philanthropic activities.

Shavlik Nonprofit of the Year

The Shavlik Nonprofit of the Year award is intended to recognize a nonprofit organization that is in service to the Estes Valley that has demonstrated exceptional dedication to its mission and those whom they serve.

Talked about Visit Estes Park is promoting Estes Park with the Holidays – “Catch the Glow Holiday Season” theme. They said their immediate focus is in these areas:

· Expand holiday lighting – newly took this over from the Town

· Deck the Halls and the Town – the Company that does the tree lighting is offering their service to businesses as well

· Estes Park Holiday Passport – engage the community with a unique holiday experience around town. Scan QR code to support other businesses who are participating in the passport.

· Boost Stakeholder Holiday Activities - starts with tree lighting all the way through New Years Eve. List of events/activities on their website.

· Add Sparkle to things, ie: VEP Marketing activities, VEP Add ons: Carriage rides, photo opportunities, Carolers, Activities in Bond Park (7 weeks of programing, 2 weekends of special programs: Dec 9 Frosty Beer Fest (Food trucks and live music) and Dec 16 with a daytime family festival such as “Sweet Stroll” through 13 candy stores in town.

· Glow in the Park – 3 floats will be featured in a tent in Bond Park to view how beautiful these floats are.

· New Wonka Movie comes out and will be playing at the Historic Theatre

· Offering a driving tour around town -opportunity to show off any residences that go all out with decorations. Email Dana@visitestespark.com if you want to enter into the residence tour of lights.
