World Polio Day is October 24th
Rotary International will celebrate the progress we have made in the fight against polio and remind the world that polio anywhere is a threat to children everywhere.
We need your support so that together, we will EndPolio.org for good. Please consider contributing what you can to support polio eradication.
An Interact kickoff meeting was October 12th at the Middle School with 35 8th graders and 15 pizzas! Lucy and Jean were on hand from Rotary. Our Teacher sponsors, Erin Berryhill and Anna Weddle gave a brief presentation about this ‘cool’ club and what the opportunities are by being part of it. They meet on Oct 20, Nov 3, Nov 7, and Dec 1 at 11:36am-12:06pm in Room 215.
Eric Blackhurst announced "An Evening of Broadway Tunes" on October 21st at 7pm in the Estes Park High School Auditorium featuring Lindsey Blackhurst and Esha Datta with a special appearance by Samantha Workman. Since this is the same evening as our Snowy Peaks wine and cheese social, perhaps you can attend both starting with our social at 5:30pm and the concert at 7pm.
Susan Johnston thanked Leslie and Mark for hosting the Autumn Gold thank you letter writing party. 48 thank you cards were written, addressed and stamped. Susan hand delivered Steve Misch's card. Steve is doing well, still on oxygen, but spirits are high.
Sue Yowell announced her good news that her cancer is NOT malignant!
Scott Applegate announced that all the nominations for the Golden Antler award were announced. Among them are our own Leslie Glover and Bill Howell. The winner will be announce at an open house at Bank of Estes Park on Park Lane, Nov 15th from 5:30-7pm.
John Tessler announced that after 3 years as President of the Estes Park Men's Golf League, he finally found someone else to take on the role!
Cory Workman announced that the Estes Park HS Marching Band placed first at the Regionals. – State Competition is in Pueblo this year. His church is donating a trailer and will be wrapped in all the Bobcat logos.
RSVP's are required for attendance at National Philanthropy Day @ YMCA on Nov 9th. It's a free dinner awards event but you need to RSVP. Our Club is nominated for the Shavlik Nonprofit of the Year Award. Jean and Kendra have been nominated for the Katie Speer Award. See below for list of awards.

Katie Speer Philanthropist of the Year
This award is intended to recognize an individual or group who has made a significant impact on the Estes Valley community in the previous year through philanthropic activities. Employees of institutions that do philanthropic work are not eligible for this award for work performed in the course of their regular job duties.
Business Philanthropist of the Year
The Business Philanthropist of the Year award is intended to recognize a business that has had a significant impact on the Estes Valley community in the previous year through philanthropic activities.
Enduring Service Award
The Enduring Service award is intended to recognize an individual or group who has made an extraordinary long-term impact on the Estes Valley community through philanthropic activities. Employees of institutions that do philanthropic work are not eligible for this award for work performed in the course of their regular job duties.
Youth Philanthropist of the Year
The Youth Philanthropist of the Year award is intended to recognize an individual or group (18 years old or younger) who has made a significant impact on the Estes Valley community in the previous year through philanthropic activities.
Shavlik Nonprofit of the Year
The Shavlik Nonprofit of the Year award is intended to recognize a nonprofit organization that is in service to the Estes Valley that has demonstrated exceptional dedication to its mission and those whom they serve.
Today's Program:Ray Leaycraft, Speaker on Paul Harris and The Rotary Foundation. Below is a "cliff notes" version of what Ray presented.
The Rotary Foundation (TRF), founded in 1916 by Arch Klump, was established to do “good in the world”, The TRF is not one of the burning topics that keeps you awake at night but it’s important to talk about. This is Rotary’s only charity and it the arm to Rotary International. RI can’t hold fundraisers but rely on Rotarians to make donations to be sustainable. TRF provides grants of over $1M daily. Since its inception, it’s spent over $4 Billion.
Foundation recognition points – Paul Harris died in 1947. As a tribute to him, over 350,000 scholarships have been given around the world to date.
In 1985, the Eradication of Polio became Rotary’s first mission. Rotary has contributed more than $2B in vaccines. For the 14th consecutive year, The Rotary Foundation has received the highest rating — four stars — from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of charities in the U.S.
The Rotary Foundation designates a Paul Harris fellow each time you contribute $1000. For example, when you make contributions to either Polio Plus and/or to the Annual fund, that goes towards your Paul Harris award. Think about contributing at least $100 per year to the Rotary Foundation, (i.e.: approximately 2 Starbucks a month = $100 annually). Go online at myrotary.org and set up an account. Then use your credit card to make either a one-time donation or a recurring donation.
The annual fund is a broad source of activities 1) the World Fund and 2) District Designated Funds. 50% of the contributions to the annual fund go to the World Fund, 50% go to the District Designated Fund (DDF).
When funds go to the World fund, a percentage of those funds come back to the DDF in 3 years that will supply district grants for the clubs in our district 5440.
For example, if our club donates $200 avg per capita to the annual fund, our club would be eligible for $6000 in grant money. Currently, we are halfway through our fiscal year and the Sunrise per capita is $81, meaning we are only eligible for $3,500 in grants.
After $1000 cash contribution are donated to the The Rotary Foundation, points are recognized.
Thanks to Ray and Cindy who are going to donate some of their points to Sunrise Rotary to help some of our members to become Paul Harris Fellows and/or get to the next level of Paul Harris this year after that member donates a minimum of $100. Two of our members have already taken advantage of that offer.
To go along with that, Sunrise Rotary will match your Paul Harris donation 2:1 between now and December 31st with a minimum donation of $100!! For some of you, this will help you towards your initial Paul Harris and for others it will help you get to your next $1000 level. The Club will use its discretion and designate accrued PH points to help those who donate, but haven't yet received a PH, to become a Paul Harris Fellow for the first time.
Simply sign in to myrotary.org (or create an account if you haven't already) and then click on "DONATE". If you need help, contact Jean, Janet or Teresa.
Our Sunrise Rotary Club goal this fiscal year is for all members to have at least 1 Paul Harris award so that our Club will be recognized with distinction at the District Conference in Steamboat Springs (in May 2024) as a 100% Paul Harris Club.
